Happy Days & Sundays
Thailand Books
I wanted to write a book about Thailand from a different perspective. I was fed up with reading about expats, sexpats and bar-girls. I was bored with the whole genre of ‘feel sorry for me because I dealt drugs and I did time in the Bangkok Hilton’. So I wanted to write something original; a Thai teenager living in the West and adapting to a new way of life. Hopefully this book reveals some humorous insights into both Thai culture and English football culture.
The original idea for Happy Days & Sundays was conceived when I was still fit enough to pull on a pair of football boots every weekend. But it was many years later whilst living in Chiang Mai that I actually sat down and completed the thing. The heat and humidity of Thailand is a world away from the delights of amateur English football. Nevertheless, it was easy to conjure up images of sloping pitches, ice-cold changing rooms and dog shit on the touchlines. Happy days.
The story was inspired by true events and particular acknowledgement must go to all the players, staff and supporters from both the Globe and the Ashwell. The characters are fictitious (with one notable exception), but are an amalgam of people I’ve known over the years from my time in Thailand and England.
Although the backdrop to the story is football related, the main focus of the book is about relationships and the importance of friendship and loyalty. Whether you love or loathe football, I hope you enjoy reading the book.
Thanks for taking time to visit this website. If you've read the book, please feel free to send me your comments (email to roy at happydaysandsundays.co.uk). Don't worry if you want to criticize it; I've worked as a stand-up comedian, so I can take a bit of heckling!
There may be times when work deadlines prevent me from responding immediately, but please be patient and I promise to reply as soon as I can.
Thank You.
